The Essential Guideline to Healing and Wholeness

The heart as a metaphor carries a number of critical dimensions. It exists as an inviolate spiritual center, meaning no matter what happens to its bearer, it has the capacity to continue.

To me the essential guideline to healing and wholeness is to hold true, no matter what, to accepting your heart. The central challenge is to know what your heart feels, wants and needs; and then commit to staying true to these guidelines.

The Spiritual Center of Unconditional Love

We have been taught for countless millenia to do the opposite, accepting the delusion that this is necessary in order to survive. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Hearts as metaphors are spiritual centers of unconditional love that are supremely reality-based. By that I mean that hearts have the capacity to know all the dimensions of acknowledgment and consideration that really exist - emotional, mental, physical and spiritual.

Opening Our Intuition

Hearts carry a significant dimension that we have also been taught to fear, manipulate and deny - our intuition. To recover our innate intuition offers an additional whole advantage to understanding and choosing beyond the analytical, with its own guidelines, style of communication and particular function.

Here is an exercise for you to try:

Open Your Spirit

Settle back, allow your body to take a most comfortable, relaxed, aligned and supported position, close your eyes, and take several deep, regular, cleansing breaths. Imagine your breath is your released, free innate spirit. For these next several breaths, each and every time you inhale and each and every time you exhale, say the word "spirit" to yourself.

Imagine your breath deepens even more. For these next several breaths each and every time you you inhale and each and every time you exhale, say the word "open" to yourself. Then for these next several breaths, when you inhale say the word "spirit", and when you exhale say the word "open" to yourself.

Receive from Your Heart

Imagine you are allowing and directing your spirit to open, and that your opening spirit is your intuition. Simply enjoy the experience and this inner journey.

Ask your opening spirit to lead you into your heart. Experience all that unfolds and speaks to you here, allowing it to bring you, in its way, to a place that feels like a place of completion.

Offer Your Gift in Return

As this occurs, imagine your heart asks you to accept it unconditionally as an central expression of love, with your opening spirit as the bridge. When you're ready, say to yourself, "I accept my heart", and see what happens.

Then slowly and easily allow your flowing breath to bring you, in its endless, easy rhythms, back and back to full, waking consciousness, and open your eyes. Record all that's happened here.

What's Next Within the Larger Scope of Meaning?

Consider how all that has happened for you now has been a process of healing and integration. What wants to happen next? Allow your open intuition to respond, and record whatever occurs.

We live in a peaking, intense, extended time of transformation and opportunities to grow and integrate in expansive ways beyond what has been possible before. May we all accept and welcome the challenge, and may it lead to our own and the world's wellbeing.

Nanci DeLeo, spiritual & bereavement counselor, meditation coach, Reiki Master
Monday, November 10, 2008 from 6:30-9:30pm, Carmen Clark Lodge
Brighton Town Park, 777 Westfall Road (near South Clinton Ave)
$50 includes all materials - registration begins at 6pm
(Centering audios and books for self-healing & development will be available)
It has been said that our earth walk is the path of the phoenix, who is meant to be born, destroyed utterly and completely, and somehow find its way to rise from its own ashes to be completely reborn. It is interesting to note that the eagle, who represents the shamanic totem that means spirit, can live up to 70 years only if, in its 40's, it plucks out its beak, talons and feathers to grow them anew and soar, rebirthed to live for 30 more years.
In this tremendous time of peaking crises, intensity and challenge, we have the power, like the phoenix, to accept our soul's call to embrace our deepest shadows in order to surrender our ego to its destined destruction, allowing the power of the fire to purify and form its own spiritual womb for rebirth and greatness. This is a year to stretch beyond faulty belief systems, woundedness and conditioned capability and truly soar like the eagle in a new universe, shaped by our own clarity and courage to commit and create in a whole new way.
Experience the path of transcendence and spiritual midwifery through ancient mythic tradition to reparent yourself, recover and free your inner light. Receive the gift of peace to awaken and unleash your spiritual power for transcendence through embracing your new emerging wisdom of conscious integration and holism.
To register by mail send check or money order payable to Marjorie Baker Price to PO Box 68015, Rochester, NY 14618; or phone/fax MC/Visa info to 585-244-6210 with complete contact information.

Clients often ask me what I recommend as key resources to support self-healing and development as the foundation of my work in Centering. Here are my "baker's dozen" that have stood the test of time through up to twenty-one years of practice, or however long ago they were published, and my reasons why.

I have an additional thought as I write, about what order to list these books, much beloved and inspirational for me, so critically helpful to clients. As Centering is an integrative practice, there is truly no linear order, for each book offers key guidelines for all the aspects of my work, simply and uniquely representing the elements that create the greater whole of personal transformation.

1. Women Who Run with the Wolves by Clarissa Pinkola Estes - A ground-breaking book from the early nineties still in print, still selling well, this series of pivotal stories and key recommendations challenges women to understand the devastating effect on their psyches and souls from being subjugated for thousands of years by a dominant patriarchal culture; and offers self-healing and intuitive ways to come to recover, empower and create a fully-present life.

2. Codependent No More by Melody Beattie - Decades old, and still supremely popular, this book explains in key detail the elements and progression of codependency, and offers excellent multidimensional guidelines to break these destructive patterns and transcend through a corresponding path of recovery to holism.

3. Adult Children of Alcoholics by Janet Wotitz - Published in the eighties, this comprehensive book reviews the associated symptoms of woundedness stemming from growing up in a family with untreated alcoholism and, by inference, any corresponding dysfunction that prevents parents from fully providing for the legitimate needs of their children; and all corresponding effects that equally-correspondingly prevent these children, when they grow up, from being fully present and whole, with an excellent guide for self-healing.

4. The Way of the Shaman by Michael Harner - Also published in the eighties and still widely purchased, this simple and excellent guide written by an archaeologist fortunate enough to be included in the inner circle of traditional shamanic practice, translates this core spiritual healing and intuitive development odyssey from the physical to the spiritual realm into current personal challenges for integrative resolution with any focus.

5. Focusing by Eugene Gendlin - Again decades old, this wonderful, simple guide to intuitive/emotional/spiritual problem-solving written by a psychologist as an extension of a research project supports the integrative embracing of all associative sensations that occur when "buttons get pushed"; and remarkably and centrally brings one to highest resolution.

6. You Can Heal Your Life by Louise Hay - The simple, profound premise of this book initially published in the eighties, currently with a wonderful new cover and "still going strong", is that mind-body healing emerges from a core place of emotional acceptance that is unconditional. There is a wonderful chart of symptoms and "dis-ease" linked to unresolved emotional woundedness, with recommended affirmations to holistically treat; as well as the author's own powerful story of recovery and transcendence, and how she successfully works with others.

7. Creative Visualization by Shakti Gawain - A primer to use your imagination in a deeply relaxed state to energetically manifest highest resolution and your heart's desires, again decades old and still greatly purchased, excellently presented as a how-to of integrative achievement.

8. Excuse Me, Your Life is Waiting: The Astonishing Power of Feelings by Lynne Grabhorn - A wonderful how-to guide to embrace and effectively work with all experienced feelings that are present to centrally support self-healing and empowerment, that puts to rest our conditioned fear to either run from or manage our feelings, which only supports pathology and inner breakdown.

9. The Relaxation Response by Herbert Benson - Published in the seventies and still in print, this succinct how-to guide to meditate and the tremendously beneficial effect it has to recover and sustain wellness and empowerment, is the foundation of maintaining integrative balance and central insight in life.

10. Animal Speak by Ted Andrews - An extensive guide to the ancient traditions that occurred everywhere throughout the tribal world and that have been amazingly sustained right up to the present, describing nonhuman life as spiritual signs and offerings to us that we can well utilize for higher guidance, greater understanding, healing, empowerment, problem-solving, and integration, that is beautifully organized.

11. The Tao Te Ching by Lao Tse - Translation by Stephen Mitchell - Said to be a feminist translation - and how lovely to see the pronoun "She" rather than "He" to describe the divine! - this ancient Chinese spiritual treatise of philosophy and successful practices for right living that is over five thousand years old offers, in magnificent poetic verse, the way to empowerment, understanding, and awakened consciousness that produce success in all areas of one's life.

12. Personal Power of Awareness by Sanaya Roman - This profound how-to book, again published in the eighties and still in great demand, outlines a practical foundation for self-formation of living a spiritually-focused life which produces integrative empowerment, healing and success.

Happy browsing, and all success as you wish. Please let me know your own unique results ins elf-healing, empowerment, development, and achievement as you see your way to exploring these amazing multidimensional literary universes. In light, Marjorie

Necessary Skills to Navigate

Life offers many rich dimensions of challenges, joys, crises, successes, failures . . . and so much more . . . all opportunities and necessities for us to develop corresponding skill and capacity to navigate for healing, development, and, yes - survival. Which brings me to join the ever-growing list of individual and group attempts, be they educational institutions, philosophies, or religious organizations, to further formulate, through reflection, Rules to Live By.

Without further ado, as the saying goes, here is what strikes me as the essential rules to live by, spurred on by what current clients are presenting as their personal challenges, as well as my own and my family's - and let's not forget our presidential election, fast-approaching - as well as all related national, even global challenges. Here they are, in no particular order:

Eleven Rules for Mastery

1. Stay as integratively well as you can, which means in greater balance and corresponding stability, involving your body, mind and spirit, and care for yourself accordingly as a central priority to live your life.

2. Know what it is to feel real peace, and take that sensation as the necessary standard to recognize and implement correspondingly real resolution for whatever problem it is that you happen to be experiencing.

3. Unconditionally, and on an ongoing basis, communicate your feelings to yourself; and then listen some more to your subsequently and freely-emerging intuition, well-keeping a commitment to yourself to honor it by acting on its direction, however it occurs in any aspect of your life.

4. Through this, admit to yourself, as it may arise, your deepest fear.

5. Ask yourself without expectation at least once a year what your heart's desires are, and write them down from a place of trust and acceptance, which allows you to release them to begin to energetically manifest, along with your corresponding commitment to carry out an equal call to action.

6. Unconditionally accept yourself and others just as they are.

7. Acknowledge that all demands for guarantees and controls are delusions, and do not exist in the world as your only path to true freedom and responsibility.

8. With your full ability to do so, seek to partner with life, understanding it is an infinite sea of unfolding, present moments that you must be equally present in.

9. Life demands that we live it courageously, and holds us fully accountable for that. It calls this karma.

10. Never try to manage or fix anybody or anything other than objects in need of repair, acknowledging the central truth that none of us have this power.

11. Know yourself as a unique expression of the divine, and act accordingly to the best of your unfolding capacity in the world.

Will You Experiment?

These eleven rules to live by in this "round". in numerology is defined to be the vibration of mastery. What do you think? Willing to experiment and let me know how it all goes?

This is time of pivotal transformation, and I believe we are all hugely and centrally experiencing our own particular versions of this supreme challenge. That is the essential rule of life. It is set to continue to bring forth transformation. How else can flow continue?

Note I have categorized this blog entry as holistic healing. Following these rules will produce the wonderful result of holistic, or body-mind-spirit healing. That's how transformation occurs, and all corresponding successes and related empowerment and development can then follow.

That which Supports and Completes the Greater Whole

Healing is about completing and extending a circle of beingness. It is about restoring greater balance that brings real resolution, peace, and acceptance - elements that form the end stage of grief.

It has been said that all core healing is about completing the stages of grief. There are no missing pieces in a full circle. Everything present supports and completes the greater whole.

Listen to What's Missing

That is why we're so bothered when we feel a sense that something is missing in our lives. That sensation is a thing to listen to, and to honor.

A shortcut to identifying what is truly missing from our lives is to dare to bring forth your heart's desires. Late this spring I was excited to go away with a friend to Niagara-on-the Lake, a pretty little Victorian town near Niagara Falls in Canada, which hosts a world-renowned Shaw plays festival every year, lasting from April through November.

The Real Meaning of the Bucket List

My friend and I went for some wonderful spa treatments and much accompanying ambiance at a perfect setting to "get away from it all". We were most successful in meeting this much-needed goal, which, as happens in full circle reality, brought us right into our spiritual centers to explore, through watching a popular movie in our most comfortable hotel room, called The Bucket List, with two of our favorite actors, Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman.

They both play older men who end up being most unlikely roommates in a hospital, from very different walks of life, who are informed that they are dying. This news becomes a catalyst to catapult them into becoming soul brothers, who well facilitate each others' transformations into whole, expanded, courageous human beings who are free and empowered to live in just in the moment, their fully adventuring lives.

The Only Choice We Have

They make a "bucket list", which is a list of what their heart's desires are that have been missing from their lives that they commit to completing before they "kick the bucket". Thanks to the character Jack Nicholson plays, they have virtually unlimited financial means to complete their lists, critically supporting each other's ability to carry this out.

Is this not multidimensional healing and spiritual development? We really only have one choice in life - to live it courageously or to turn away from it.

Becoming Greater Than We Have Been

The times particularly demand living courageously. I think we are so far gone today, as the world reveals the depth of devastating impact we've had on it, that we can no longer get away with turning away.

As I think about it, turning away unravels circles, and our primary spiritual healing and development directive says we are meant to "come full circle", becoming greater than we have been through finding that which otherwise we know is missing. Have you made a "bucket" list?

Dare to Create Your Full Circle of Heart's Desires

My bent is to call that a "Full Circle" list, and, on that note, invite you to settle back, take a couple of deep, cleansing breaths, and imagine how easily your light, opening breaths can carry your freed consciousness right into your heart. Ask your heart center to tell you what it sees is missing from your life, and then take a few moments and record your ensuing "list".

Then draw a very large circle on a blank sheet of paper, and put every item on your list wherever it seems to want to fit anywhere inside the circle. When you've finished, settle back once more and gaze at your drawing. How are you feeling?

Our True Spiritual Contract

Record your sensations, and any insights which occur. I would additionally refer you to a book written by Stephen Levine over a decade ago called A Year to Live, which is a how-to guide and spiritual commentary inviting the reader to commit to spend a year carrying out a spiritual contract to live as if that was the last year of their life.

Each moment we are given is a shining moment, a literally "once-in a-lifetime" gift that will never come again, to be honored and savored. We own our moments, and are meant to express courageously, and with maximum possible consciousness, our corresponding desires, understanding them as each exquisitely full circles of completion.

Rules from Your Center Guide and Uplift You

Yesterday in my monthly memoir writing group I was moved to offer the following journaling exercise that I wanted to share with you on considering how your unfolding life has gifted you with its own unique "Rules to Live By", and how to expand these rules to further support your ongoing healing, empowerment and development. We all have them, and they are intrinsic to who we are and what we are at our essence. When we believe in our heart of hearts that the rules we live by must occur primarily through a sense of obligation, these are not really spiritual rules - they are fear-based conclusions coming from earlier woundedness and the energetic imprints they leave at our core, as well as faulty conditioning, wherever it comes from.

On that note I invite you to settle back, close your eyes, and take 10 full, deep, regular breaths. Observe how your sense of inner space opens rhythmically inside you and spreads everywhere throughout your being. This is your soul's quiet, clear reflective space rising to speak to you and enfold you.

The Meditation and Its Gifts

Ask your soul to communicate to you its rules to live by, and when you feel complete with this communication, easily and natrually return to full waking consciousness, open your eyes, and record all the rules your soul revealed. Then record your impressions of all you experienced through this guided meditation.

Now review your list and write the following questions, noting the answers which emerge:

1. What rule(s) came from innate knowing?

2. What ruls(s) came through being supremely challenged in your life?

3. What rule(s) seemed to come as a surprising gift?

Make a Commtiment

Feel free to journal additionally all that comes up inside you in further exploring your thoughts and feelings regarding these questions, and in relationship, to further add to and/or edit your list. Then consider how your rules inspire and ground you to commit to complete your soul's choice for healing and development in your lifetime, and extend your journaling to express all that presents as additional insights and spiritual direction.

Which means . . . you do what, going forward? Write down your plans, keep to your divine experiment, and continue to create light miracles in your multidimensionally cohesive, unfolding life. Happy travels!

Its a Bad Combination

I am impulsive. I used to have hair-trigger responses that have not completely gone away despite my ever-advancing age, including a temper. It is an odd combination with being extremely shy as a child, which also has its residuals, as well as quite sensitive; and carrying lots of old imprints of being pretty significantly traumatized, even terrorized, as well, on not one, but several key fronts that go back a long ways.

Of course, all of these factors could well fuel impulsivity, as would playing what at times can feel like an endless waiting game, with the haunting accompanying image of standing patiently at the back of a line, expecting at some point to make my way to the front regarding whatever my individual needs are that do deserve to be met, only to discover that somehow I don't ever change my position. And then there's the quality of passion in this mix - creative passion, physical passion, and really loving the adventure and excitement of a well-lived life.

All that being said, I do get reminded on a fairly regular basis by the universe that impulsivity does not have its uses, other than leading to addiction, entanglement and, speaking of the original translation of the word "sin" from the Hebrew, "missing the mark". Impulsivity is an acting-out behavior reflecting anger, fear and hopelessness regarding trusting and effecting complete outcomes.

Setting the Stage for Further Complications

As I've not written a journaling entry for quite some time, I wanted to explore this common quality that does get us in a whole lot of trouble and sets the stage for even more complications than those that may already understandably exist, thus making life challenges worse. Who among us is not impulsive? To be completely devoid of this quality is to deny the creative passion and presence of life, but the key differences lie in impulsivity also including the elements of immaturity, impatience, entitlement and separating oneself from reflective mindfulness.

So here is my related journaling exercise for you to try to reveal and resolve impulsiveness. Believe me, I'm trying right along with you!

A Healing Journaling Exercise to Recover Your Greater Self in 5 Key Steps

Settle back, take several deep cleansing breaths, close your eyes, and imagine that your guide, higher power, or sense of the divine joins you to answer the following questions and move you to write down all the responses which emerge:

List 3 memories you have of behaving impulsively. Describe the situations involved and the outcomes.
Now for each situation list what you learned from it. Consider if the learning you believe occurred stopped the particular kind of impulsive behavior going forward, and record these assessments.
Go back to each memory, once more settle back and take several deep, cleansing breaths, and close your eyes. Experience each memory again, only this time, let the circumstances play out with you not behaving impulsively - instead, see yourself behaving reflectively and mindfully, while being fully, passionately present. What happens?
Once more record these experiences. Then, taking your time, read through all that you've written and record any additional insights that occur.
Ask yourself what you've learned through these different responses and outcomes that extend and improve your capacity to trust yourself, and become more empowered and successful in the world. Consider three choices you can make now to express this trust in whatever aspects of your life you choose.

A New Directive to Experience a Better Partnering with Reality

Happy experimenting! You've made a new commitment to yourself from a place of greater understanding, acknowledgment and insight, to break out of the trap of impulsivity, and change outcomes to best support your heart's desires.

Keep me posted, and trust in your power to well enjoy your unfolding life. You deserve it!

Technorati Tags: transcending,journal,journaling,mindfulness,trauma,self-help,meditation
