How to Survive In These Hurricane Times

Hurricanes as Metaphors for Transformation

I found out a little while ago that the place I thought I most miraculously and wonderfully escaped to for the weekend as a magnificent personal growth and self-healing retreat may well be in the path of the east coast hurricane, being told it will hit there the day after tomorrow.  Who would have thought that the Berkshires would be involved in this predicted major and unusual disaster, as they haven’t been, by report, since 1985?

It occurred to me that Irene as a vastly unpredictable, large, complicated, unexpected, continually shifting hurricane could well describe my life these past two years.  I feel I’m in a position of great, disquieting mystery as to how my “hurricane” will resolve . . . and what will be left to rebuild . . . and where, as it finally finishes playing itself out, leaving what in its wake, I will land?

Are We Really Living in “Hurricane” Times?

Is my current life and peaking, surprising challenges a singular reflection of how we’re really living in “hurricane times”, I wonder – these most unsettling times of vast economic challenges, organizational disruption, and unknown outcomes that we’re told could occur in epidemic proportions?  Where will we be left in its wake?  How will we survive, and on what terrain?

Terran, I also note, is an ancient name for Earth – only difference is the second last missing letter, which (no surprise, metaphorically!) happens to be I.  We all have experiences shaped by our terrain, and we all carry inner as well as outer infinite terrains, each with their “global” and transformational impacts.

Top Five Choices to Survive and Live Anew, & Better

In my 61 years experiencing this lifetime I consider how many hurricanes I’ve experienced, and on what inner and outer terrains?  I also think about the fundamental and unleashed elements of hurricanes – wind (air) and water covering, demolishing,  submerging the earth and fire (sun) and all that populates the particular terrain it hits.

Here are my top five key word lessons that hurricanes of any kind offer to best support what I’m moved to call transformational survival as the “tough gift” of renewal and recreation of our times:

1.  Surrender to the greater change

2.  Keep your wits about you, understanding they root in common sense

3.  Understand your survival is at stake, and respond accordingly by being and acting greater than you thought you were

4.  Appeal to your sense of the divine, and open yourself and your spirit fully to receive any and all help wherever, however it appears

5.   Accept the gift of sweeping change as cleansing, and be willing to start again – and differently in a different space.  

Realize Our Human Capability to Transform

Five in numerology is understood to be the vibrational frequency of transformation.  Those are very different waves to ride that exist in another universe with different laws and relationships.

We complicated, unexpected, multidimensional, continually shifting, unpredictable human beings may have surprising hard wiring as part of our fundamental make-up that may make us quite innately capable of “riding those waves” of hurricanes, embracing the force that offers cleansing and great transformation to be the only “spark” that brings new beginnings.  Think Noah and what he survived and accomplished . . . against all odds . . . and be, as I now feel, strangely heartened.

Motivation is the key to transcending challenge and manifesting your dreams.  Although motivation can appear when survival is threatened through "fight/flight" responses, once the threat appears to be resolved the motivation disappears.

The only real way to build motivation that will work and sustain you to achieve your goals is to access it from within.  Free will is the only part of us that can unleash motivation.

The Key Way for Self-Healing, Empowerment and Experiencing Greater Good

When We Thank with an Open Heart We Open the Door of the Universe to Give Us Even More of What We Want in Our Lives

I love, honor and greatly appreciate my clients – all of them from the beginning of my Centering Tools practice 24 years ago this month through this week.  Recently, as frequently happens, a client who excitedly and with centrally good reasons reported tremendous transcendent healing and success, told me about a particular affirmation to acknowledge and thank whoever/whatever she received, and the Universe.

I want to pass that wonderful sentence on to you with the recommendation that you try it every day for one month, and please let me know the results of your experiment in self-healing, empowerment and experiencing greater good in your life.  Many metaphysical books like The Secret, Personal Power of Awareness, the Game of Life and How to Play It, and You Can Heal Your Life strongly recommend ongoing acknowledgment and appreciation for all that we know is good and right for us to have in our lives.

This premise is based on a fundamental law of physics which is also said to be a core operative law of the spiritual and multidimensional universe, which is Whatever we focus our attention on grows and expands – whatever we don’t focus our attention on dies for want of attention.  It is, of course, the basis of what is called e power of positive thinking.

The subconscious, according to decades of both body-mind and clinical research regarding how hypnosis works, only accepts and fully responds to the positive as a servant immediately and fully responds to a command, as it is very literal; and can “do nothing” with the negative other than cancel out whatever related thought is attached to it.

Heroic Myths Since Our Beginning Inspire and Help Us Survive

 We have always, as a species, research confirms, seemed to repeatedly tell each other our favorite stories.  In ancient days we sat around tribal camp fires in a great listening circle, spellbound at hearing again and again heroic myths.

They both explained the world and inspired us to not only survive but transform ourselves, our lives, and our communities.  Suppose these myths truly are our core grassroots spiritual initiatives for individual and community healing, empowerment and success - a concept that is becoming increasingly considered as the best sustainable solution to survive and support ourselves and each other in this seemingly fracturing world.

Discover Your Own Best and Core Story as A New Higher Roadmap to Success

 I invite you to try this journaling and visioning exercise to discover your own core and best story and make it your experimental roadmap to best navigate in the world you may at times struggle to function, even survive in.  Universal myths are visions . . . and visions are the composition of transcendant, expanding, developing reality.

We are all geniuses at easily making up our own stories - as Einstein said, The imagination is everything.  Universal myths have the following basic cast of characters:

• Hero/heroine who "comes of age" and is transformed through courageously, against all odds  meeting a supreme life-death challenge as the critical "peak" of a journey which is a true oddyssey
• Fellow companions who surprisingly show up along the way
• A "dragon" who must be vanquished
• A great new emerging love 
• A key sacrifice for the greater good and real resolution
• The death of the previous life and/or self that existed before the journey
• A greater understanding through experiencing the story of divine power/"magic"

A Guided Meditation and Journaling Exercise to Envision and Create a Greater You

Now settle back, allow yourself to be drawn through your deepening, easy breath into a relaxed, meditative and visioning state.  Focus on a key challenge you presently have.

Using the above qualities as a guide, begin to make up a story about how you then experience this challenge. Take all the time that you need to inwardly journey as the hero/heroine through your imaginative story which includes all of these bulleted elements.

Decide What You Can Do Today to Become the Hero/Heroine of Your Life

When the story comes to its end, record the entire vision.  Then read all that you've written, and record whatever insights occur.

Consider your story is your inspiring myth to best guide you to successfully meet this challenge and experience higher resolution, healing and success.  What can you now do in your life to respond and act  in the spirit and real meaning of these ways?

Ten Tips to Stay Afloat in Times of Great Change

We Always Have the Power to Create and Sustain

This is a precipitous week nationally.  As a nation we're about to hear (by tomorrow, presumably) whether we'll be saved beyond the eleventh hour as I write this from economic default, which has not happened in our history.

We truly live in times of great change - economic, social, technological.  We have the power and capacityto both create and respond to change, and to extend our potential. 

Adults are Never Victims

What gets in the way of staying afloat in times of great change?  The riskiest and most deadly attitude we can take is to determine ourselves as victims.

I continue to talk to clients (and myself, when stressed!) about my core understanding that adults are never victims, and that there are no win-lose resolutions, only win-win.  From that foundation, here are my ten tips in the face of terrible uncertainty, complicated and key challenges to wellbeing and choice, and threatened core system breakdowns, to stay afloat:

Top TenTips to Lightly and Fully Stay Afloat

1.  Eat and drink well to sustain and support your body - remember stress dehydrates and compromises digestion.

2.  Move at least an hour a day - remember the world is greatly changing, and as we're in it and of it we need to be moving as well - staying still truly "goes against the greater flow".

3.  Unless very bad weather prevents you from doing this (and then, make it up as soon as possible), spend at least an hour a day outside - sun, whether apparent or not, is truly our life's blood, and profoundly fuels and grounds us.

4.   Get on average 7-8 hours restful sleep per day - the fundamental "get away from it all".

5.  Meditate - any way possible - for at least five-ten minutes per day to clear and energetically balance yourself as you connect with your unique sense of the infinite.

6.  Ask yourself how you're feeling several times a day, making sure you answer the question with a "feeling" word, noticing whatever physical sensations you have as well; then saying to yourself, "I accept".

7.  Unconditionally love yourself as a whole human being with the divine free right and responsibility to care for yourself emotionally, physically, mentally and spiritually; and consider and commit to doing whatever it takes to sustain this, ongoing.

8.  Know that you are equal in all ways to every other human being, especially regarding personal power.

9.  Accept that you will never know what tomorrow brings.

10. Look every day to let go, let be . . . and in that infinitely open space, listen to your sense of your "still, small voice", or intuition/spirit, and act accordingly.

Know You Deserve and Can Well Receive

Live long, and, as Spock would say, prosper from a sense that you wholly deserve, and can create and receive in any and all ways in your unfolding life.
