The Only Thing Happiness Depends On

Happiness Depends on “No-Thing”

I grew up in the fifties when everyone was given a whole dictated laundry list of what happiness depended on that included earning a certain amount of guaranteed money, having a certain kind of job “for life”, marrying “the right” person who would well support his wife, having children who grew up in a certain kind of way, living in a certain kind of house in a certain kind of place, looking a certain way, having friends with particular characteristics, being a WASP, retiring at age 65 with designated wealth for the rest of your life, weighing a certain amount . . . Besides its definite dinosaur quality, does this never-ending list seem terribly boring as well as impossible?

I am and have none of these particularly-delineated things.  I have had some of them in some related ways at different times and situations in my life, and none of them has in any way guaranteed or even, within its particular scope, brought foundational happiness to me. 

Happiness Depends On Discovering the Greater You and Your State of Greater Being

I hear a lot about seeking happiness in my Centering Tools practice – sometimes somewhat thinly-disguised as “having to find my purpose in life”, or presented as “what prevents me from . . . “ – and a lot of “if only . . . ” which I call “playing the waiting game”.  This is what I have personally discovered about my own capacity to be happy, much to my surprise, at this fairly late time in my life:

Happiness doesn’t depend on things going smoothly in your life or on having anything in particular.  It depends on you and your state of being, provided your basic physical needs are met for shelter, food, water, space to move and care for yourself, and being safe. 

Happiness Requires Free Space in Which to Enter and Offer Itself to You

I have discovered that happiness does not depend as well on your key problems being solved.  It does require finding your way to a state of being that includes a fundamental sense of peace, freedom, and access to your authentic sense of personal power.  It also requires the wherewithal to be present.

It has been said that happiness is elusive, which I wholeheartedly agree with.  The more we directly seek happiness, demand happiness, the more it seems to slip beneath our fingers.  And yet, happiness finds us – it comes like a surprise burbling brook at the most astounding time, but it need free, unconditional space in which to enter. 

Ten Key Questions to Create Paths to Discovering Your True Happiness

So here are some questions for you designed to help you find your happiness, and help your happiness find you.

1.   When was the last time you remember feeling centrally, truly happy?

2.   Can you list five times in your life when you remember this?

3.   When was the last time you behaved simply, wholly spontaneously?

4.   If you were to do so now, what would you do?

5.   Do you feel at ease with yourself?  Free?

6.   What would it take to feel both of these sensations?

7.   If it required nothing, how could you imagine having these feelings?

8.   When was the last time you felt unafraid – fundamentally safe?

9.   Imagine you can contact your body and ask your body what it knows about your happiness.  Record what you imagine your body says to you – shows you in response.

10. Suppose your true spiritual purpose and responsibility in life was to live in the present, unconditionally love and care for yourself, and view others as your complete equals?  Would your life change?  How?

The Irreplaceable Loss of Giving Up Your Own Authentic Personal Sacred Space

Top Ten Tips to Transform Yourself and Renew Your Life

Here are my top ten tips for putting yourself in sacred space and tuning in to the indestructible vibrational frequency of your unfolding heart, your clearing mind, your emptied, flexible gut, and your flaming soul:

1.  Spend at least ten uninterrupted minutes a day settling back in a relaxed, aligned and supportive position, eyes closed, fully and easily deepening your breath; and then, as you continue to breathe, say to yourself the word “spirit” several times, visioning how you fully call your spirit to you and merge into your own inner sacred space to just be there now.

2.  Play at least several times a week with animals and/or children and/or stuffed animals and /or an instrument and/or make and color a mandala, or any design you wish to make within a large circle to freely, creatively express yourself.

3.  If at all possible, every day or as many times as you can prioritize, go to a pleasant space in nature for at least a half hour, and sit/walk, and “drink it all up”.

4.  Journal five or more minutes a day, including how you feel in that moment and your vision for a renewed, peaceful life.

5.  Ask your sense of the divine every day for peace and healing for yourself and your loved ones.

6.  Thank your sense of the divine every day for at least ten blessings in your life – whatever you are truly grateful for (these can endlessly be repeated; and if you feel you can’t think of anything start with the sun).

7.  Dance alone for at least ten minutes to music you love.

8.  Write a love letter to yourself.

9.  Write a love letter to who you truly love (this may be a person who has passed on).

10. Ask your sense of the divine to help you forgive __________________________ – and especially yourself.

The Alternative to Fruitless Fixing to Meet Your Real Needs

All codependency and recovery treatments warn against the fruitless perils incurred when we try to “fix” anyone else, or even especially ourselves, as a way to demand solutions to problems.  The Hindu religion says that we incur the worst kind of karma when we try to “make” someone do what we think they should do regardless of how we think it is “best”.

What are our alternatives when we care greatly, and want and need to “make things right”?  The truth of the matter is when we give up the addiction of “fixing”, the universe beautifully swings open its large doors to give us much space to have great effect.

An example of that would be the grassroots campaigns the fast several years to achieve goals, successfully conducted courtesy of the Internet.  We in fact have tremendous potential for greater impact, far more than we generally can ever know, with the following additional qualifiers:

1.  No fixing means no manipulating.

2.  No fixing means no demanding.

3.  No fixing means no expectation.

4.  Tell the truth objectively – no the answers to “observer” questions: who, what, where, when, who and how is this happening.

5.  Own your request, your feedback, assessment without blaming anyone else – say “I think, I feel, it seems to be, in reviewing the situation this is what I see . . . “

6. Don’t ask anyone else’s permission to say what you feel.

7.  Be as savvy as possible in assessing your understanding of the milieu and culture involved when you communicate without “walking on eggs”.

8.  Stay centered from an inner-connected space that feels like a “clean” space of empowerment.    

9.  Know what you want to have happen and, where applicable, your related decision(s), as well as your needs; and check to see none of your understanding involves your coming from a place of “fixing” – and include what you want and need, and your related decisions, in communication as relevant.

The spiritual center of all this is the understanding that as individuated divine consciousness, we have infinite power to choose, with clear and free intent, to initiate and respond to support the greater good in unconditionally loving and letting go through all the above ways .  Note this sentence says nothing – nor should it – about letting ourselves process, note, and unconditionally listen to our unfolding feelings, which can quite clearly reflect the stages of grief in their progression – denial, bargaining, anger, hopelessness/helplessness and acceptance. 

That is a separate dimension within the greater whole of who and what we are, and does not in and of itself interfere with our divine right to choose to initiate and respond.  No one and nothing can in and of itself stop that which exists inviolate within us with its potentially unlimited power, as the essence of who and what we are.

How to Utilize the Power of Prayer as the Soul's Energetic Transmission for Miracles

Prayer Strengthens and Supports Miraculous Survival

The older I get, the more I believe in it.  To me prayer is a verbal and heartfelt transmission to one’s personal understanding of the divine. 

When I heard about the horrific earthquake and tsunami in Japan last Friday followed by aftershocks that continue as we speak, I both energetically transmitted and prayed for divine help and miracles to offset however possible the global tragedy and horrific loss of human life, and damage beyond measure – and I prayed and energetically transmitted for my daughter’s best  childhood friend, who has been living just about in the epicenter over there for the last 5 years.

How to Keep Ourselves Afloat and Develop Hope

I felt her strong presence before I heard she was okay.  In these days of massive and surging global disasters, along with such key political challenges, prayer is a most essential connection to not only be our pipeline to our sense of the All That Is, but to grow and nurture our own inner spirits to inspire and strengthen us to respond in the most wise and caring ways. 

We are so challenged in our times to both sustain and support others, and “keep ourselves afloat” from a place of original and developed hope, and greater, higher connection.  There are four types of prayer, referenced on pages 201 and 202 in  a very well-reviewed book by Mark Thurston, PH.D. and Christopher Fazel that I bought when it was first published in 1992, the year my youngest daughter was born, which was (and still is!) a pivotal help to me, The Edgar Cayce Handbook for Creating Your Future:

Prayer is the Antidote to Worry

It’s interesting that the authors offer any/all of these variations of prayer as an antidote and disciplined, chosen alternative to worry.  That brings me to what I feel is the pivotal gift of prayer as a primary healing transmission.

Prayer heals.  It heals because it energetically uplifts through its transmission the person praying to a higher, lighter vibrational frequency that is of the universe of infinite expression, which accepts the call for healing and correspondingly responds.

Open Your Power for Healing for Yourself and the World

To consider each of the four types of prayer described above as a greater, higher call for personal – even global – healing opens the door to miracle-making.  I invite you to settle back into a deeper, relaxed meditative state, and focus in turn on experimenting with making each of these four types of prayer in the order in which they are listed; taking all the time that you wish to fully experience these inner journeys to greatly connect with your sense of the divine.

When you’re finished, record your experience and any insights which occur.  I recommend trying all four types of prayer every day in a deeply relaxed, focused, uninterrupted and open state for a month – and see what amazing miracles happen in your life!  Then see how these miracles extend to your loved ones and your community to support the transformation the world so desperately needs, for all our greater good.     

Don't Be Afraid

Fear Gets in Our Way

In our culture we may be told our mothers say this to us to soothe us and take away our fear.  Sometimes we’re lucky enough to have mothers tell us this – mine did, and it helped – but really didn’t work.

Fear does get in the way of being able to speak up for ourselves, commit to doing what’s right, and actually dare to risk making our dreams come true.  It “ties our tongues” and scrabbles our brains.  How can we release fear, even transmute fear into something that won’t get in our way?

Ten Tips to Get Past Your Fears

Here are my ten proven steps to get past fear ruining your plans and your life:

1.   Begin by facing it, which means literally name it. What really makes serious headway is journaling about your fear directly and simply; and include a full description of all the ways you feel and think without telling yourself what you have to do about any of it.

2.   Tell someone whom you know loves and accepts you unconditionally for just who you are all about what you’re afraid of, asking them to simply listen to you and, if you wish, express to you how they feel about you.

3.   Consider who you most admire, living or dead, fictional or real; and then imagine that they show you how they successfully deal with this fear. 

4.   Record this vision extensively and then commit to carrying out this approach step by step as your “mindful, empowered experiment”.

5.   Ask yourself in a relaxed, reflective, very objective state what is the worst thing that could actually happen to you if your fear is realized; and progressively ask yourself with each answer as it occurs, “and then what? . . . and then what? . . . and then what?”

6.   Ask yourself as well in this state what you feel will happen if you don’t settle your fear, and hold this focus until you feel complete with it.

7.   Decide what activities will move your focus away from your fear and spend some serious time experiencing this, telling yourself you are more than your fear, and life goes on.

8.   Imagine, however you are able, releasing your fear – transmuting, or turning over your fear so it disappears.  What will you do then?  Experience this new vision.

9.   Focus on any memory you have of getting past a central fear as completely as you possibly can, and then record your experience; noting how you felt as that occurred and how you feel now.

10.  Return to your original list of your fears, and write all of them as their exact opposite, putting the phrase “I am” or “I have” before each of them.  Read through this new list, observing what happened to your fear.

Postscript: As life goes, This too shall pass – but in the meantime, let your heart guide you to carry out what it chooses to do, knowing it is right and part of your sense of integrity, faith, and courage in yourself and your capacity to draw on your own inner strength – it does move mountains!        

How to Transform What is Holding You Down Into What Keeps You Going Forward

Know Your Real Source of Abundance and Security

The magical word to achieve this switch is very old – its called alchemy.  When we come to understand what is really holding us down and back we are fundamentally challenged to transform it into its opposite – that which lifts us up and thrust us greatly forward.

In the Middle Ages alchemists, as they were called, were expected by kings to turn lead into gold.  Lead has properties that block and can be toxic to us.  Gold is our source of abundance and security – it sustains and prospers us – we value it above all else.

Where is the Lead in Your Life?  The Gold?

What do you feel in your heart of hearts is holding you down?  What do you feel in your heart of hearts is holding you back?

I have a meditative and journaling exercise for you to try to know what is lead in your life, and be able to transmute it into what is gold.  So  settle back into a comfortable, relaxed, supported position and close your eyes.

Ask Your Heart to Tell You What is Holding It Down

Take several deep, easy breaths.  As you continue to breathe, when you inhale say the word receive to yourself and when you exhale say the word release to yourself.  Imagine with the breaths you continue to take, you begin to easily , naturally change into your free, whole spirit, which envelops you and lifts you higher and higher.

Imagine your breath easily and naturally draws you into your heart.  Imagine as this occurs you can ask your heart to tell you what is holding it down; what is keeping it from moving forward.

The Opposite is the Path to Transform

Record whatever comes up by way of response.  How do you feel in this experience of inner connection?

Then open your eyes and look at what you have written about your heart’s message to you as to what is holding it down and keeping it from freely and openly moving forward.  On a separate page, write down the exact opposite.

Your Alchemy Happens When You Open to Your Flowing Spirit

This is your alchemy – your opening to your spirit, which can lead you to being able to transform what is holding you down into what keeps you going forward.  Now ask your heart what bridge it needs to continue in this transformational direction.

Once again, record your experience.  Finally, consider what you need to commit to carry out in your daily life to protect and sustain these great gains, and record your insights.

Be the Source of Your Own Magic

We create our own magic.  As we are aware and willing to connect to our own infinite spirits, so can we access and develop the strength and personal power to renew our integrity and best care for ourselves.

Alchemy is about discovering how to have sustainable faith in ourselves through effecting true transformation.  Consciousness lifts, awareness heightens, and we correspondingly become greater and freer to express our unleashed higher power.
